During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
